The data are in and Innovation Schools are showing solid academic gains for students in Indianapolis Public Schools. Five Innovation Schools supported by The Mind Trust have received A letter grades based on Indiana's growth-only accountability framework for new schools, and while ISTEP+ passage rates across public schools statewide have remained flat, the 2016-2017 Innovation Schools have improved on average 4.6 percentage points over their previous year's results. While there's much more work to be done to improve proficiency, we're encouraged by the strong leadership of school leaders and teachers and the promising growth shown by students at Innovation Schools across Indianapolis.
In the fall of 2016, Principal Mariama Carson launched Global Preparatory Academy at Riverside 44 as a member of IPS' Innovation School Network. Just one year later, Global Prep has doubled the percentage of students passing both the Math and ELA ISTEP+ assessment and improved her school's letter grade from an F to an A. After listening to The 74's interview with her, it's not hard to imagine how one transformational leader made such a dramatic improvement possible.
