A summer of learning

Jaylen is one of 4,000 Hoosier schoolchildren — 2,500 in Indianapolis — who are learning instead of lounging thanks to Summer Advantage, a program founded in Indianapolis with the help of the nonprofit Mind Trust that tries to use summer to push kids to higher achievement rather than letting them backslide.

Mutz: Hoping reform chic sinks into the culture

More than 800 local business, civic, political and education leaders showed up May 5 for The Mind Trust luncheon featuring columnist and author David Brooks. It was apparent this event at the J.W. Marriott was the place to be. Just about everybody in the local establishment was on hand. It was the biggest turnout for an education event I have ever seen in Indiana.
