The Mind Trust adds former Indy deputy mayor to leadership team

INDIANAPOLIS – The Mind Trust today announced that Steve Campbell, former deputy mayor of Indianapolis
and current small business owner, will become vice president of communications and oversee media and
public relations, communications and new media for the Indianapolis nonprofit.

A graduate of the MSD Washington Township schools, Campbell served as deputy mayor and director of
communications for Mayor Bart Peterson from 2000 to 2007. He currently operates Campbell Strategies
LLC, a minority-owned small business focusing on communications, public relations and media strategy for
clients locally and statewide.

He also is an adjunct professor at the Indiana University Department of Journalism & Public Relations.

As deputy mayor, Campbell oversaw city operations in Community Development, Constituent Services,
Environmental Affairs, Media & Communications, Neighborhood Services, New Media and Public Access. As
director of communications, he was Indianapolis’ chief marketing & communications officer and the city’s
spokesperson, giving several thousand interviews with CNN, USA Today, ESPN, the Washington Post, the New
York Times, the Indianapolis Star and other local, national and international media.

He previously served as a top media advisor to Indiana governors Evan Bayh and Frank O’Bannon.
Campbell is a graduate of Wabash College and the Indiana University School of Law. He also studied at
The American University in Washington DC and is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership
Series. He has been featured in Who’s Who in Black Indianapolis and was awarded the Sagamore of the
Wabash, Indiana’s highest civilian award, by three different governors.

Active in the Indianapolis community, Campbell has served the boards of multiple organizations, including the
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indiana Landmarks, People for Urban Progress, Young Audiences of Indiana,
the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Art Center, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Indianapolis Downtown
Inc., the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site and Girls Inc.
