Impactful Teaching: The Indy Summer Learning Labs’ Educator Experience
“What made me want to become part of the Indy Summer Learning Labs program was the opportunity to gain valuable classroom experience. It’s been a great way to set the pace for my teaching career after graduation,” shared Laynie Cheek, a 2024 ISLL Classroom Assistant
Indy Summer Learning Labs (ISLL), operated by The Mind Trust with support from the Indiana Department of Education and in partnership with local community organizations, is a five-week, free or low-cost academic and enrichment summer program designed to support students in Indiana. When the program launched in 2021 it aimed to bridge the learning gap seen after the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, three years later, ISLL continues to be a support for learning recovery and a proven strategy to accelerate learning through on-grade-level instruction.
This story follows what an ISLL teacher may experience throughout the program, from the initial training sessions to the last hour of six weeks of training and instruction. Through their experiences, we will explore the program’s impact on both the educators and the students they serve.
Week 1: Training + Preparation
The teacher journey with ISLL began with a week-long training session from June 10 to 14. The comprehensive training was designed to equip teachers with the tools and resources they needed for success. The Lavinia Group facilitated the training sessions, which included teachers from across Indianapolis, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
During the week of training and throughout the five weeks of programming, teachers receive:
- All daily lesson plans, materials, sample instruction, assignments, and assessments provided by Lavinia Group
- Training the week before and during ISLL to orient teachers to this curriculum and give strategies to best support students
- Competitive compensation during pre-program training and student program instruction. In 2024, rates were $25/hour for classroom assistants and $50/hour for teachers per hour for up to $7,500 (there is no bonus structure in place for Summer 2024)
- Support and check-ins from Academic Deans to address any questions or challenges
Ruth Motley, a 2024 Christ Temple ISLL Teacher, shared her enthusiasm for the program: “I want to help students find the same excitement I have for reading. I see the challenges our children face in understanding and grasping the true meaning of what they read. I want to impact them positively and equip them with strategies they can carry into the next year.”
Michelle Strong, a 2024 West Side Baptist ISLL Teacher, added, “The curriculum is so helpful. You can be at a very basic level of knowledge, and it clearly shows you what to do and how to build off of it. No matter where you are in teaching, the training helps.”
Week 2-6: Impactful Teaching During ISLL
The Indy Summer Learning Labs (ISLL) follow a consistent schedule: students receive academic instruction in English Language Arts (ELA) and math during the morning, followed by enrichment activities that vary per site in the afternoon. Teachers work in-person with classrooms ranging from an average of 12 students to 23 per grade level students per grade level. For teachers, mornings are dedicated to instruction at the site, while afternoons are reserved for planning, evaluating student work, and engaging in weekly professional development with the Lavinia Group.
Although bridging the gap between the end of the school year and the start of the Summer Learning Labs was challenging, the initial feedback from teachers and students was overwhelmingly positive. In the first week, teachers observed significant learning gains in math and were pleased to see students enjoying the program. Teachers found the curriculum highly valuable, offering structured and effective learning experiences. They were especially gratified to witness students’ growth in knowledge and enthusiasm for learning.
As the program progressed, its impact became increasingly apparent. Mackenzie Purvis, a 2024 Circle City Prep ISLL Classroom Aide, remarked, “The curriculum is extremely strong and beneficial for students who are on grade level. At the start, only one student could write two sentences independently, but now, all of my students can do so.” Teachers also appreciated the supportive environment. Cresta Wintin, a 2024 Mt. Carmel ISLL Teacher, noted, “The pay is amazing, but the real value lies in the pre-training and ongoing support from supervisors and deans. This site has been fantastic.”
Reflecting on the Program’s Conclusion
As the ISLL wrapped up, there was a strong consensus among teachers, site leaders, and students to return for the following year. Teachers highlighted the program’s impact on their professional growth and the student’s progress. “I would come back next year,” said Ashley Hogan, 2024 ISLL Academic Dean. “The support and the progress we see in the students make it all worth it.”
Patti Moore, a 2024 Wee Care Early Learning Ministry ISLL Site Leader, praised the program, stating, “The teachers have been amazing! They are very helpful and have not backed down from any challenge thrown at them.”
Overall Impact
The Indy Summer Learning Labs (ISLL) continues to be a crucial initiative that benefits students and teachers. The program has established a nurturing and effective learning environment through its training, structured curriculum, and continuous support. Additionally, the experience teachers gain through ISLL builds their capacity and equips them with new strategies and skills to return to their buildings in the fall.
“From pre-test to post-test, I saw significant growth. It’s a positive place where kids can be safe and thrive over the summer,” noted Michelle Strong, a 2024 West Side Baptist ISLL Teacher.
ISLL exemplifies how targeted summer programs can significantly enhance educational experiences, empower teachers, and enrich students’ lives. As we wrap up the Indy Summer Learning Labs 2024, we look forward to the promise of Indy Summer Learning Labs for years to come.
